Pancake Day, or Shrove Tuesday, is the traditional feast day before the start of Lent on Ash Wednesday. To celebrate this traditional feast day Staff at Cornelius Vermuyden School took part in a pancake competition.

Pupils from a Canvey school made a splash when they won a district swimming gala. The youngsters from Canvey’s Cornelius Vermuyden secondary school were crowned Year 9 boys district champions.

Cornelius has won the Castle Point and Rochford District Gymnastics competition. The competition format saw Year 7 and 8 pupils making up the junior team, while those in Years 9,10 and 11 made up the senior squad.

Year 11 pupils came into school for a completely different experience on 27th November. The purpose of the day was for students to gain an understanding of what employers look for when interviewing for jobs.

Cornelius Vermuyden students rose to the challenge when asked to build a shoebox for the Samaritans Purse. Students filled 100 shoeboxes to be sent to those in need. An Interhouse competition was held to see who could fill the most boxes.

Pupils in Food Technology have excelled this term, producing work above and beyond expectations. Outstanding chefs included Alyssa Duffield yr 7, who designed & made a fully personalised burger; presented in bespoke packaging. Luke Barnard yr 7, decided to experimented with ingredients for a beef burger.

The cast of Macbeth performed their production at the Shakespeare Schools Festival held at The Queen’s Theatre, Hornchurch on November 9th. The project immersed pupils in the language of William Shakespeare, which was both inspiring and challenging.

The annual Remembrance Service is one of the key events in the life of Canvey Island which bring all sections of our community together in an act of remembrance. Students; Michaela Aubrey, Deputy Head Girl, Taylor Garner, Deputy Head Boy, Darcie Cleaver and William Whitehair from Year 7, represented the school at the Remembrance Service at the Canvey Island Paddocks.

Cornelius Vermuyden entered our U13 girls into the tournament organised in our area by Southend United Football Club, which took place at Waterside Farm on Thursday 5th November. The girls fought hard and displayed great teamwork and determination.
