Christmas Shoebox Appeal

November 23, 2015

Cornelius Vermuyden students rose to the challenge when asked to build a shoebox for the Samaritans Purse. Students filled 100 shoeboxes to be sent to those in need. An Interhouse competition was held to see who could fill the most boxes.

The winning house was Darwin, in second place was Athena house and third was Zeus house. The school was assisted by The Canvey Island Rotary Club who sponsored the event through the Rotary Interact Club that is being established at the school.

Head teacher Mrs Skewes said, “Cornelius Vermuyden Houses; Athena, Darwin, Hera, Einstein and Zeus all donated shoeboxes for the Samaritan Purse Appeal.  The students were very generous, benevolent and selfless in donating goods for the boxes. All together there were 100 boxes crammed with goodies that will be distributed to underprivileged children around the world.I am very proud of the students at Cornelius Vermuyden school. Yet again they prove to be charitable, kind and thoughtful.”

Canvey Rotary Club President Sue Hampson remarked, “I was so impressed by the enthusiasm and initiative of the students for the Shoe Box Appeal. They have shown the true meaning of Christmas by giving joy to those less fortunate. They are an inspiration to all. Congratulations on a wonderful effort, 100 gifts for the underprivileged children. Well done Cornelius Vermuyden School”
