Mrs Skewes funded the initial set up of the Canvey Children’s University scheme seven years ago. The aim of the scheme is to encourage all children aged 4 - 14 years on Canvey Island to try new experiences, develop new interests and acquire new skills through participation in imaginative and creative learning activities outside of the school day.

On Wednesday 17th October the Cornelius Vermuyden school celebrated the annual Awards evening. This event had extra poignancy this year as it was Mrs Skewes last such event before her retirement at Christmas.

The students had to hike into the mountains; camp overnight; climb through underground tunnels and map them out; canoe down a lake, a river and over a weir; build a raft and sail it into the lake; rock climb; dive in to the lake at night etc.
