National Poetry Day and visit from poet Steve Tasane

Mr Knowland, Literacy Coordinator
October 1, 2017

Thursday 28th September was National Poetry Day and this year’s theme was ‘Freedom.’ Students were treated to renditions of teachers’ favourite poems such as Maya Angelou’s I know why the caged bird sings, as well as French poetry from the Modern Languages department. There will be a display of students’ own Freedom poetry and the very best will be published in the etc. magazine later this year.

We were also visited by performance poet and novelist Steve Tasane who entertained students with his rap-funk styled poetry and plenty of audience participation. Steve has performed his poetry in venues as diverse as Glastonbury Festival and Battersea Dog’s Home! Steve has also been described as ‘the master of tongue-twisting, mind-boggling alternative poetry.’ Students were especially impressed with his ‘Alphabet Rap.’ Several students said how much they enjoyed hearing poetry spoken out loud and were inspired to write their own.
