Jack Petchey’s “Speak Out” Challenge!

Mrs Peel - Subject Leader for English
May 4, 2017

Back on the 23rd March, 25 Year 10 pupils nervously awaited their "Speak Out" public speaking workshop with Elaine Powell, the engaging and enthusiastic trainer who has worked with our pupils each year for the last seven years. All of the pupils had a wonderful day and commented on how the skills they had learnt had helped them to gain in confidence and that these skills would benefit them in the "real" world. Elaine herself commented on the group saying:

" What a wonderful group of students. From the beginning of the workshop, they were fun, enthusiastic, attentive, focused and energised to take part in all the activities. It was really great to see that they all applied themselves throughout the day and I could see their confidence grow. I could have picked at least 10 students to go through but think we picked 6 of the best to go through. Delightful day. One of my best."

From the workshop, five pupils: Zoey Broadbent, Kian Crudgington, Ryan Reece, Nathan Barlow and Macy French presented in front of their peers in assembly. The year group were thoroughly engaged and supportive of all the speakers and much discussion ensued as to who should be selected as the winner and runner-up. This decision was tremendously difficult to make as each speech was so different. Topics ranged from personal experience of illness to being the odd one out in a family who are all sports mad.

Luckily, the decision wasn't down to me but to our judging panel, consisting of: last year's winner, Mufaro Mutsatsa, Mr Knowland, Mrs Halpin and Head of Year 10, Mr Chittock. Judges scored each pupil on three areas: content, delivery and structure. Results were extremely close but after totting up the scores, the runner-up with his speech "Odd one Out" was Nathan Barlow and out winner with her speech on the topic of feminism in the 21st century was Macy French.

Nathan and Macy both worked extremely hard to perfect their speeches and to prepare for the final which was on Thursday May 4th at Castle View School.

At the final, Macy had lots of support from her family, staff and myself and an enthusiastic group of Year 10 students, who welcomed her on to the stage and showed their appreciation at the end of her performance, by giving a rousing cheer. Macy's performance of her speech "Girl Power" was phenomenal. As Elaine Powell put it: "She was amazingly charismatic and delivered an exceptionally thought provoking speech."

Macy has made us all very proud, so please do watch and enjoy her performance!
