Mrs C P Skewes, Headteacher
August 29, 2016

We have had a fabulous morning on Thursday 25th August celebrating our Year 11’s successes at GCSE. We’ve seen a significant rise in the number of top grades with the percentage of A*s. In a highly competitive examination framework, students need to work extremely hard to achieve the top grades and we are thrilled to see so many of students reaching these standards. We are very pleased to have made progress on our outcomes from last year.

Our strongest individual results include the following:

Callum Cuthbert – 11A*s, 1A and a B in Further Maths

Shannon Gonzalez – 4A*s, 6As and 3Bs

Courtney Kemp – 3A*s, 8As and 1B

Georgia Gonzalez – 4A*s 5As, 3Bs and 1C

Francesca Cox – 3A*s, 3As and 4Bs

Louise Goddard – 2A*s, 5As, 4Bs and 1C

…Callum Cuthbert

Callum joined Cornelius Vermuyden School from William Read Primary School in 2011 and has recently been awarded eleven A* grades and one A grade in this summer’s GCSE exams. This is an incredible achievement and his results are a testament to his hard work and dedication to improvement, as well as the high quality teaching he received at the school. In short, these outstanding results make Callum the highest achieving student in this school’s history and place him in the top 5% of students in the UK at GCSE.

Head teacher, Mrs Carol Skewes, describes Callum’s success as “richly deserved”:

“Over the years, Callum has consistently challenged himself to achieve only the very best. He richly deserves his GCSE success and has secured for himself a place in the Sixth Form at Westcliff High School for Boys, where he intends to study Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology and History, before entering Higher Education to read Medicine. We all look forward to seeing Callum continue to succeed and develop over the next few years and we encourage him to remain in close contact with this school.”

During his time at Cornelius Vermuyden School, Callum involved himself in many of the extra-curricular activities that the school offers. He was a part of the school’s ‘High Achievers’ programme, including being a member of the nationally recognised ‘Brilliant Club’, an organisation aimed at raising aspiration amongst young people. Callum also achieved a First Class pass and distinction for his work with the University of Cambridge and completed his first GCSE in Year 9 – an A grade in Mathematics.

Callum has consistently displayed all the qualities we would expect of a Cornelius Vermuyden pupil; he has been hard working and humble, according to Assistant Head teacher, Mr Keenan:

“Callum has been a pleasure to teach and have in our school. Although his results have been a clear highlight, I would like to focus on his attitude to learning and, importantly, towards improving his mastery of subject knowledge and his humble attitude towards receiving feedback to help him improve. He was predicted high grades, which can bring pressure; but he did not rest on his laurels and continued to strive for perfection. His preparedness was second to none and his achievements and work ethic act as a brilliant example of how to cope with pressure, and prepare for examinations, for us all. I am convinced that he brought up the achievement of others around him and, having spoken to him about his future, he will hopefully be back visiting pupils and teachers at the school regularly. As a school, we can learn a lot from Callum’s attitude to learning and I look forward to seeing him here at the school again soon.”

We’ve seen superb outcomes in various subjects at A*-C, including:-

Additional Maths – 100%

ICT – 97%

Statistics – 93%

Art and Design – 89%

Photography – 89%
