At Cornelius Vermuyden School, we are supporting our pupils to be active citizens, sharing their passion and ideas for a better world.

On Friday 10 November 2017, Castle Point MP Rebecca Harris visited our School as part of MPs Back to School Day. This event brings decision makes and leaders all over the world back to schools to learn from students what they can do so that all young people are free, safe and educated. Rebecca Harris MP joined our pupils in learning about the 100 million children currently denied their right to be free, safe and educated. Students presented their research findings, asked thoughtful questions and enjoyed hearing Rebecca’s responses to them.

This day was part of a new initiative by Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Kailash Satyarthi, and it was supported by the National Education Union, the ONE Campaign and Anti-Slavery International.

Rebecca Harris MP was inspired by the passion, intelligence and ideas of our students. For taking part, Cornelius Vermuyden School will be counted and listed as part of the global activities presented to the United Nations Secretary General later in the year.

Also in attendance was Billy Hill from the campaign outreach team at ONE. Billy talked about ONE’s global education campaign and how our students can make a difference. Students donned virtual reality headsets to see what life is like for youngsters in Kenya. It was a fantastic experience for our students and we look forward to having Billy back for a year group assembly.

Those who want to get further involved can choose to become a change-maker for all young people to be free, safe and educated. They can connect with other young people across the world and join as a school or community group or as an individual to drive local change that has a global impact at www.100million.org and www.one.org.

Together we can increase global compassion and build a world where all young people are safe and learning in school, not working to survive.
