British Science Week 2017

Miss N Ounzain - Lead Practitioner for Science
March 21, 2017

British Science Week 2017 came to Cornelius Vermuyden School with a bang. 2017 has turned out to be one of our biggest Science weeks to date and was packed full of unique opportunities that you cannot always experience in the classroom.

It was off to a flying start (literally) when we hosted the water rocket competition where the challenge was to design and fire a water rocket the furthest, needless to say it was a very fun if not wet event. On the same evening we hosted a penguin preservation project in which students took part in active research into the population of penguins in the Antarctic, a special well done to Thomas Whitbread (Year 7) who counted over 600 penguins, he counted so many that his name will be mentioned when the research is published. Following on from that we had the “Big Fat Science Quiz of the Year” hosted by Mr Head, it was a tense competition and it came down to a tie break question. Eleanor Stevens (Year 8) clinched it for her team on the tie break and triumphed to victory.

The general theme of the week was anatomy and dissection and we did not disappoint. All year 8 students had the opportunity to learn about anatomy and were able to take part in their very first rat dissection, and the grand finale came in the form of a pigs head dissection carried out by our very own Miss Robertson and Mr Lill. It was a real crowd pleaser and was an excellent opportunity to see anatomy first hand. The science department were blown away by the maturity of our students and the respect they showed to all the animals. It was a great week had by all and we can’t wait for next year where we aim to be bigger and better. Bring on Science Week 2018!
