ZONES of Regulation
What is Zones of Regulation (ZOR)?
Zones of Regulation is a self-regulation approach that helps students recognise and manage their emotions, impulses, and sensory needs. It categorises feelings into four coloured zones and teaches strategies for moving between zones appropriately. All zones are natural and expected, there are no “bad” zones.
The Four Zones

Why do we use ZOR?
Some students struggle to recognise emotions and the tools needed for self-regulation. ZOR helps students understand their feelings, how these influence behaviour, and what strategies they can use to manage them. This supports wellbeing and readiness to learn.
How do we use ZOR?
- ZOR was introduced in September 2026.
- Staff wear ZOR keyrings on their lanyards as quick reference tools.
- Posters explaining each zone and strategies to improve students’ zone are displayed on classroom and office doors.
- Staff and students are encouraged to use ZOR vocabulary daily (e.g., “I’m in the Yellow Zone, I need to take deep breaths”).
- Individual coaching is provided for students who need extra support.
How can parents/carers support ZOR at home?
- Use the same language: Talk about which zone your child is in and what tools they can use.
- Encourage strategies such as:
- Reinforce that all zones are normal, but some zones are better suited for certain activities (e.g., Green Zone for learning).
Our Commitment
We believe emotional regulation is key to learning, wellbeing and growing. ZOR is part of our whole-school approach to supporting every child’s success.
