PHYSICAL EDUCATION - EXPECTATIONS

Dear Parent/Guardian,

I would like to welcome you to this academic year, and are very much looking forward to working with your child in physical education. I would just like to communicate with you the expectations of the PE department as well as the exciting opportunities we are able to offer your child.

Firstly it may be key to be aware of the days that your child has physical education lessons so that kit expectations are met and this can be viewed on their timetable in their planners. Students will have a minimum of three lessons of PE a fortnight, unless they have opted for GCSE PE where they will have an additional six lessons over the same period.

In addition to the school planner, if your son/daughter is in Year 7 or 8, they will receive a PE planner. It will be their responsibility to ensure that it is looked after and that they have it with them at all times. Any PE planners that are lost or damaged must be replaced at a cost of £2.

Kit requirements for girls and boys differ slightly and are listed on the school website. All students must bring their PE kit with them to every lesson. If for medical reasons your child is unable to participate in the lesson, they must bring a signed note from you and appropriate kit to change into as we ask that your child still gets changed as they can continue to make progress in the lesson through undertaking different roles within PE, other than performer. It is also more comfortable for them to change back into dry uniform if weather conditions are poor. If your child has a long term medical condition, please provide us with details of how to accommodate this along with a doctor’s note if necessary. If your child does not bring their kit to lesson, they will be asked to change into the spare kit we provide and issued an appropriate sanction. There are showers available in the changing rooms so your child may want to bring a towel. It is advisable that students use the showers to remain hygienic especially during the cross- country season. If your child chooses to apply deodorant in the changing rooms, it must be non-aerosol, as this is an irritant to asthmatics especially after exercise.

Within our broad and balanced curriculum, we cater for all individuals from those who are talented at sport to those who do not feel confident in sport. Our objective is to ensure all pupils feel physically confident in a way that supports their health, fitness and future development. We aim to educate your child on the importance of physical activity and how it is fundamental to a healthy active lifestyle.

Experts recommend that 60 minutes of physical activity a day would help your child maintain a healthy active lifestyle. However, your child does not have PE lessons every day, so we ask that your child undertakes some form of physical activity in their own time to avoid the detrimental effects of inactivity. Within the department, your child has access to the information of all the local clubs in the area, which would give them the opportunity to develop their sporting ability, make new friends and most importantly, stay healthy. If there is any further information you require regarding outside activities please do not hesitate to contact a member of the PE department.

We are very proud here at Cornelius to offer an extensive range of extra curricular opportunities before, during and after school. Our timetable of clubs is available on the school website and is updated each half term with new clubs and activities. We encourage all students to attend and get involved with as much physical activity as possible. As a school, we run the inter- house school sport competitions and enter district and county competitions in a range of sports such as netball, basketball, boys’ and girls’ football, hockey, cross country, athletics, rounders, cricket, trampolining, gymnastics, aerobics, swimming and table tennis. We have specialist teachers as well as outside coaches that work together to ensure your child receives the very best level of support. We also believe it is important that your child values their community and consequently, we give them the opportunity to work with the local Rotary club on the RYLA project and local primary schools, hosting and running events. Additionally, we also offer an extensive range of enrichment trips and activities such as the Bronze Duke of Edinburgh award, sport tours, match visits and ski trips, which are exciting opportunities that will enhance their experience here at Cornelius.

If your child is fortunate enough to be selected to represent the school at sport, they must attend the training session for their team and also an additional fitness session on a Wednesday morning at 7.30am to help improve their overall performance. If they choose not to attend these without a note from you, their position in the team is likely to be compromised. Through sport, we learn that success comes through dedication and commitment. If your child has been selected for a fixture but can no longer compete, they must give the teacher in charge at least 48hours’ notice to allow for changes to be made.

Please regularly check our website for updates on the extra curricular programme, the inter-house competitions and the additional enrichment opportunities that support your child’s happiness, health and success!

We are looking forward to having another great year and would like to thank you again for your support.

Yours sincerely,
Miss A Keeble
Head of Physical Education
