Nurses’ Prologue

Another shift, 12 hours long,
Away from family where I belong.
I wear my scrubs of royal blue,
Mask, gloves and face shield too.
The mask, it rubs my ears: they’re sore,
My hands have never sweat like this before.
Not many staff, they are all of sick
We must work hard, we must work quick.
Patients keep coming, the numbers just grow,
A virus like this I never did know.
They are coughing and hot, they cannot breathe,
We will make them better, that I believe.
No family members can come to stay,
The virus, it is in the way.
After my shift, my feet do ache,
I’ll just get home, but I can’t stay awake.
At 8pm they clap, they cheer,
They say we are heroes, now cherished it’s clear.
It’s my job, it’s my passion to make people better,
But please stay at home, you’ve got Boris’ letter!
This might end soon it is hard to tell,
I’ll just do my job and I’ll do it well.
