Mufaro’s Speak Out Challenge

Public speaking is a common fear. Many people wince at the prospect of having to ‘ say their piece’ in front of an audience. The Speakers’ Trust runs an annual event, “The Jack Petchey Speak Out Challenge” to combat these fears in young people and to give them a voice. The Jack Petchey Foundation, a charity that holds the achievement of young people at the root of its work, funds this event. The Speakers’ Trust believes that everybody should have the skills, confidence and desire to speak in public and is dedicated to helping young people around the country to do this.

Two of our students in Year 10 were chosen to take part in this year’s competition. Mufaro Mutsatsa and Oscar Preston were selected from a number of students who spoke in assembly way back in March. The competition was stiff and these two students stood out as rising talents in the public speaking arena. Mufaro delivered a great speech about Africa named “Nkosi Sikelel' iAfrica” (God Bless Africa) and was voted to represent Cornelius Vermuyden School in the regional finals. Oscar came a very close second with an impassioned speech on the education system in the UK and was the reserve for the final.

The atmosphere at the final was electric and the hubbub in the theatre at King John School was testament to the support for all of the finalists. You could feel the nervousness of the contestants but they know that nerves can be turned into a positive force. Many friends and family came to support our budding finalist and he was clapped and cheered heartily onto the stage. His speech was a vocal tour throughout this vast continent, very lyrical and poignant. He had a confidence and assurance about him that belied his years and although he did not win, he certainly gave it his all.

After the judging had taken place Mufaro said, “It was a wonderful experience. I am so proud that I came this far and represented my school in the regional finals. The level of competition was high this year and I wish the winner well. Being part of Jack Petchey Speak Out Challenge has certainly given me the skills and made me a more confident public speaker. Giving me a voice has helped me to bring my dream of becoming a lawyer even closer.”
