Maths Masterclass

A selection of Year 5 pupils from the local primary schools in Canvey attended a Maths Masterclass session on Wednesday 31 January, 2018.

The pupils investigated the properties of shapes and what shapes are most suitable for the construction of bridges. Putting theory to practice, they competed to make structures from marshmallows and tooth picks. The aim was to build a construction that would carry the most weight.

It soon became clear to pupils that using triangles in their design produced the best results. The Maths team was highly impressed with the creativity and problem-solving skills displayed by the little builders: The winning team’s structure managed to carry a whopping 11 paperback books!
