Cornelius Vermuyden School Hosts Children’s University Graduation

Mrs Carol Skewes (Headteacher at Cornelius Vermuyden School) established the Canvey Island Children’s University six years ago with the aim of encouraging local children on Canvey Island to try new experiences, develop new interests, and acquire new skills through participation in activities and pursuits outside the normal school day. Since then, and twice every year, over one hundred children and their families attend Graduation Ceremonies held at Cornelius Vermuyden School. This term, the two Graduation Ceremonies took place on Tuesday 16 and Wednesday 17 May, and were hosted by Mr Alex Cass (Assistant Head: Lower School).

A warm welcome and brief introduction was followed by the grand entrance, which sees graduates (wearing graduation robes and mortar boards) processing into the Main Hall to the stirring and inspirational music of “The Cornelius Rhapsody”. Graduates were then invited on stage to receive their certificates and, for many, this was their first experience of a graduation as they collected National Bronze Awards for 30 hours, with one student even completing in excess of 1500 hours and receiving the National Gold Alumni Master Degree.

Finally, Cornelius Vermuyden School was delighted once again to welcome Reverend Marion Walford as Guest Speaker and Sharan Parsons (Canvey Schools’ Partnership) who led and oversaw the organisation of the event. Thank you to all and to the Cornelius Vermuyden School staff and students who helped and supported this event.
