Castle Point and Rochford Girls’ District Football

Girls’ football has grown immensely across the District in recent years, with increasing numbers belonging to local clubs. Subsequently, more opportunities are now being offered across more schools than ever before to embrace this growing sport.

This year, Cornelius Vermuyden has organised and hosted the very first District Girls’ Football Tournament. It began on Tuesday 11th October with both the U13 Girls and U16 Girls age groups. Following this, on Tuesday 18th October, it was the turn of the U14 Girls. All 3 competitions were well represented from many schools across the district. We were very lucky with the weather on both afternoons and all teams put on some great performances; many matches were very closely contested.

Cornelius fielded a team in all 3 tournaments and enjoyed some great successes:

Our U13 girls enjoyed a win over Castle View and held King Edmund to a draw.

The U14 girls won 4 out of 5 of their games, giving them a place in the final against King John. The girls went out on the pitch with a very positive attitude, putting King John under pressure from the start. Their organisation, discipline and perseverance paid off and a goal came from Zoe Johnstone which resulted in a 1-0 win and the accolade of District Champions was theirs to celebrate.

The U16 girls achieved 2 wins and a draw, securing themselves a place in the final against FitzWimarc. Having drawn against them earlier, this was going to be a tough game for Cornelius. Both teams fought hard but were unable to break through, sending the game to extra time. Despite some great performances, we were held to 0-0 draw and the match was to be decided in a nail biting penalty shoot out. Both teams scored their first 4 penalties. Cornelius stepped up to take penalty number 5 – it was saved. All eyes were then on Eleanor-Mai Hope, goalkeeper, to keep us in the game. She pulled off a great save under pressure and, with the following spot kicks, Cornelius went on to win 5-4 on penalties and also achieve the honour of becoming the inaugural District Champions.
