Thanks to the British weather three days of snow delayed this year’s World Book Day and the Canvey Reads Together community project. However, despite being postponed our rearranged Book Day didn’t disappoint. Year 10 pupils manned the ‘Grab a Book’ stall in the Knightswick shopping centre, which once again proved very popular with the public both young and old. Furthermore, our pupils, staff and parents donated some superb books to the event which went like hotcakes! Year 7 pupils held a Readathon challenge and read quietly throughout the day, raising an incredible £200 for Little Havens hospice, with two pupils Evie Waters and Freyja Whiting, collecting £130 between them. Along with the cake sale we actually raised a whopping £330.
This year’s Canvey Reads theme was crime detective fiction and pupils wrote some superb extracts worthy of Agatha Christie herself. The highlight though, was our visiting author Anthony McGowan, who has written several books, but his trilogy, Brock, Pike and Rook have really inspired our pupils. Indeed, many of them still talk fondly about these books three years after reading them. Anthony spoke about his inspirations, childhood and future novels, and read extracts from his books; our pupils were hung on his every word. Above all, he was impressed with the enthusiasm of our pupils, and their questions and own ideas for his novels. In fact, impressed is the wrong word – Anthony was more than impressed. He told us it was a day he will never forget. Special mention has to go to Alex and Oliver Reynolds whose knowledge of his books and suggestions simply bowled him over. He even gave them his own copy of Rook and inscribed it with the words: ‘For Oliver and Alex – The two most extraordinary young people I have ever met!’ Truly an inspiring day, which although a little late, was worth waiting for.
